Commercial Lighting Design: Getting Interiors Right the First Time

Lighting is the highest-impact, lowest-cost design lever in commercial interiors — and the one most often reduced during value engineering, usually to the project's detriment.

Layer the design

Ambient, task and accent layers each serve a purpose. Spaces lit with a single uniform layer read as institutional no matter how good the finishes are.

Color temperature and rendering

Keep color temperature consistent within a space, and specify high color rendering where merchandise, food or skin tone matters — retail, restaurants and medical especially.

Controls and energy code

Occupancy sensing, daylight harvesting and automatic shutoff are code requirements in most jurisdictions. Design controls as a system rather than adding sensors at the end.

Coordination

Fixture layout must be coordinated with ductwork, sprinkler heads and structure before ceiling framing. Relocating a fixture after rough-in is a change order for three trades.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is LED always the right choice?

For commercial interiors, effectively yes — the energy code, fixture availability and maintenance economics all point the same direction.
