Dispensary and Specialty Retail Build-Outs: Security, Compliance and Design
June 5, 2025 · 6 min read

Regulated retail carries construction requirements that ordinary stores never encounter — most of them related to security, access control and inventory separation.
Security infrastructure
Camera coverage with defined retention, access-controlled doors, alarm systems, reinforced storage areas and dedicated network infrastructure are typically prescribed by regulation, not preference.
Space separation
Public retail, limited-access areas, inventory storage and back-of-house must be physically separated with controlled transitions, all documented on the approved plan.
Inspection sequencing
Regulatory inspection is separate from building inspection and frequently the last gate before opening. Schedule both, and never assume they can happen on the same day.
Design and finishes
Durable, high-traffic finishes with strong lighting design; display casework coordinated with security sightlines and camera placement.
